Tuesday night maintenance
Sync will pause for about an hour starting at 23:59 on Tuesday, October 14, while I work on the cabling at the data center.
This is a planned change. Files you save during the pause are held on your computer and sent when sync comes back, so there is nothing you need to do. The nightly jobs will run at 03:00 as usual.
Version 0.9.4 is out
Version 0.9.4 went out to everyone this morning. The biggest change is that DewPoint now has your next file ready before you open it. In our September test it picked the right file first 91.4 percent of the time. We had hoped for 85.
The full list of changes is on the Release notes page. If something looks wrong, write to support.
Moving the engine to a real data center
Until now the sync engine has run on a few machines in our office closet. That was fine for a hundred people. It is not fine for a thousand.
This month I am moving it to a rack at a colocation facility. The rack is in a room called Server Room B, and I am told the air conditioning is better than ours. A rack has a monthly bill, so I set up autopay. It is on my card until the company card arrives.
One thousand seats
We opened the beta in waves this spring. We are going to stop at 1,000 testers and hold it there until the engine is ready for more.
Some of you asked why we are not letting everyone in. We want to keep answering every email you send. Thank you for the bug reports and the screenshots.
Search that learns what you mean
Search in DewPoint does not only match file names. It notices which result you open and what you did just before and after, and it uses that to rank results the next time.
If you search for “lease” and open the renewal letter, the renewal letter comes first next week. That is why search is a little worse on your first day and better after that. Each account learns on its own.
What “closed beta” means for your files
People ask whether we keep their files. We do. Everything you sync is stored on our servers, and we keep it until you delete it or close your account. Older versions are kept too, until space runs short.
If you stop using the service, your account is marked idle and the nightly jobs keep running on it. Those jobs are what keep the rest of the system fast.
We moved out of the apartment
As of Monday DewPoint has an office. It is Suite 204, it has a radiator that bangs, and Mark has already claimed the window.
For the first time there is a door between the servers and the place where I sleep. Dev gets the desk that is not next to the printer. Come and see it once we have chairs.
